Have you seen this classic musical? It's one of my all time favorites.
Believe it or not, the song Good Morning was actually written for the 1939 film, Babes in Arms starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. (Here's the link if your'e interested.) In fact, songwriter Nacio Herb Brown used several songs that he had previously written in the 1920's and 1930's - closer to the time the movie is set.
Singing in the Rain was released in 1952. The storyline centers around actors in a movie company around the 1930's - when sound had just been integrated into pictures. Before this time all movies had no sound - no talking, no music, no sound effects. Can you imagine watching a movie that's totally silent?
Here's the song.
Listen to how strange it would sound with no music at all.
When you watch this time, pretend that you are the musician responsible for adding music to this scene. You could sing your music, tap it on the table, or use an instrument if you have any at home.
Are you going to choose to make your music fast or slow?
Loud or quiet?
Will you use voices or instruments?
Will your music make the audience feel something (like happy or sad or silly or serious)?
Think about it, create it, and enjoy your breakfast.
